Uterine Fibroids – Consider The Following Recommendations
Women experiencing uterine fibroids should consider the following recommendations:
- The health of the thyroid gland should be evaluated first.
- Restrict exposure to exogenous estrogens by:
a. Increasing consumption of fiber – use Glucomannan or Fiber Supplementation eg. guar gum or psyllium husk
b. Using I3C/DIM with curcumin – 1-2 capsules twice daily
c. Avoid exposure to hormone disruptors such as:
-
-
- Foods exposed to pesticides, fertilisers and hormones (eat organic as far as possible)
- Foods exposed to plastic – avoid cling-wrap and avoid heating foods in plastic containers – use glass or ceramic instead
- Chemicals in tap water – use filtered or bottled water
- Synthetic estrogens and progestins
-
- Enhanced detoxification of hormone excesses is essential to uterine health. Use supplements/herbs known to support liver function such as:
a. Milk Thistle Extract – 500mg once or twice daily
b. N-Acetyl Cysteine – 500 mg once or twice daily together with 1000mg Vitamin C
c. SAMe – 400-800 mg twice daily
- Screening for heavy metal contamination is advisable as is taking appropriate action to rid heavy metals from the system (Consider chelation therapy – use Oral EDTA together with mineral replenishment as directed on the lable)
- Supplements considered specific for uterine health are:
a. Coenzyme Q10 or Ubiquinol – 50 mg twice daily
b. Zinc – 30-80 mg daily.
c. Arginine/Lysine, 500 mg of each daily, with Double Vitamin C and Pyridoxamine (vitamin B6) to assist absorption.
d. Vitamin A (up to 20,000 IU daily is recommended) together with an antioxidant complex containing beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium such as ACES Plus.
- If blood testing reveals that estrogen levels are too high consider taking Arimidex (Anastrazole), an aromatase-inhibiting drug, at a dose of 1 mg several times a week. Arimidex is a prescription drug that has virtually no side effects other than suppressing too much estrogen if the dose is too high. Consult your doctor about reducing the dose if symptoms of estrogen deficiency manifest (e.g., hot flashes or any other symptom)
